I lost my husband Paul on July 30th after a series of poor decisions from the treating doctors in HDU at Mt Gambier hospital.. Paul was brought to Mt hosp from Millicent with suspected pneumonia and other issues by ambulance on Tues 24th. He had tems of 39 which is high for cancer patients.Granted ,Paul had Multiple Myeloma and Amyloidosis with a terminal prognosis, but I did expect that the treating Dr (s)might contact his specialists at RAH to see if he should be best sent there for treatment. It took 3 days for Mt dr to ring his haematologists and the infectious diseases people for help. He was trying all sorts of antibiotics that werent working..My husband had pneumonia and some other bacterial infection with high temps and by Fri ,his dr at RAH was waiting to hear back if he needed to be moved after I d rung her. No call back from Mt hosp dr...so nothing happened before the weekend.They were also changing heart medication and I told them the drug wouldnt work as he had had it before.. but was told its standard procedure No !...he wasnt a standard case yet they seemed to be experimenting with antibiotics that werent doing anything for days and he still was deteriorating. By Sunday I was told the bug he had in his stomach and it was blowing him up like a balloon. Dr thought was air from his high flow oxygen.....the Bacteria was in there because his stomach wasnt working and theyd been giving him Lactolose to move food through... he wasnt good with lactose( in that medication) and that probably wasnt helping him either. I suspect they didnt know what they were dealing with really. Different Dr on Sun decided to send him by medivac on Sun night to Flinders hosp as no beds at RAH. He didnt make it from the ambulance to the helicopter to Adelaide. I received the dreaded ph call at 3am to say he had a cardiac arrest on the tarmac. Devastating....The thing that angers me is this has happened to other cancer patients too...and Mt Gambier Hosp has done the same with them....not thinking that specialists need to be called promptly as they can deal with patients themselves... NOT LISTENING TO CARERS who do have a fair idea that treatment might be better given in Adelaide where the relevant Specialists are . He might have been treated more effectively and bacterial infection quickly identified had he been sent sooner. The middle of the night was a terrible time to be moving patients when it was so cold. This SHOULD NOT be the standard treatment for very sick patients with compromised immune systems. I want the Mt hospital to change their thinking before other cancer patients have a similar fate.I will be writing to SA Health also. My sons were denied access to view his body after driving from Adelaide on Mon 30th. Very poor overall Mt hospital. Your Drs and nurses need to listen and not dismiss family members who might just have more idea of best practice for their loved ones.

My wife recently had Day Surgery and spoke highly of the staff and facilities. She commented on the friendly, kind and caring staff that showed compassion towards her needs. Thank you all.
After 30 minutes I still hadn't been asked my name or my problem, and there was no drama happening. I relocated my big toe myself and hobbled out.Wonder how they manage chest pain, once they ask the problem.I used to work in the Mount ED - its slipped a bit.Oldish female RN not in a happy place.
